Kiwanis International is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world, one child, and one community at a time. With the power of a worldwide network, Kiwanis clubs combine their forces with supporting universal programs such as eradicating Iodine Deficiency and eliminating Maternal and Neonatal tetanus, saving and improving the lives of billions of people worldwide. Clubs also help identify and address the needs of their local community. The Kiwanis Club of Winter Haven is involved in many ways in the community, including:
Drowning Prevention Program – Our club provides free swim lessons to young children twice a year through a partnership with the City of Winter Haven. The lessons educate and train children in water safety. Read Around the World – A literacy program where volunteers read to preschool students annually in six local Head Start programs, providing each child with a library of books. Service Leadership Programs – Our Service Leadership Programs, including Key Club in high schools, Builders Club in middle schools, and K-Kids in elementary schools, allow students to build character and develop leadership skills through community service. Sponsoring $1,000 Annual Scholarships – Kiwanis’ motto is “Serving the Children.” the Kiwanis Club of Winter Haven Foundation has invested more than $60,000 with the Polk Education Foundation to endow scholarships for three graduating high school seniors yearly. Community Partners – We partner to assist other organizations: bell ringing for the Salvation Army, advocating for the Children’s Miracle Network at IHOP’s National Pancake Day, adopting projects for local United Way agencies, collaborating with Keep Winter Haven Clean and Beautiful with various projects, and many more. Leadership and Service – Kiwanis members are engaged in their community, volunteering at local events and serving on boards for nonprofit organizations.

Hello Gentlemen,
We spoke about this at the Kiwanis pancake breakfast and you’d asked for more information. I wanted to follow up to see if you had any questions on this early childhood initiative. We’d love to work with you to provide the first Born Learning Trail in Winter Haven for your families. We are currently working with Lake Wales for a new trail and hope to see one in Winter Haven to bring awareness and fun to the importance of early learning and family engagement! Please let me know if you’d like to schedule a virtual meeting to discuss.
I have some time next Friday, May 9 from 9-10 or 11-12 to meet via Teams if you’re available.
Sincerely,
Gretchen Ceranic

Hi Gonzalo and Robert,
Thank you for following up! As I mentioned, one of United Way of Central Florida Success By 6 initiatives is something called Born Learning. Through national public service advertising, parent materials and community mobilization activities, Born Learning provides action steps that are fun, easy and can be taken in everyday moments to prepare young children for school.
One of the ways we use Born Learning in the community is with interactive Born Learning Trails. We currently have them located at Hernando’s Landing, Common Ground Park, Fontaine Gills YMCA and Lake Parker in Lakeland, Kiwanis Park in Lake Wales and Sun N Lake in Sebring. Here is a link showing the trail in action, https://youtu.be/CXjLRHmS-tc, an article from our Sebring trail and more about the trails in general, Overview | United Way – Born Learning. I’ve also attached a file showing each trail sign and a trail info sheet you can share with your members.
Each trail can be customized to the community’s wants and needs. We can provide the signs to you at no cost, or a partner could purchase them and have their logo included on the sign. United Way can organize volunteers to install the signs during a “Day of Caring”, the City or parks department or civic group may wish to install them themselves or find their own volunteers.
